Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Burton was from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, one of five children born to Jacob William (1874-1948) and Mabel (Blough) (1874-1948) DeChant. His father worked for the Blough Manufacturing Company in 1920 and 1930. After he graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in 1927, Burton went to Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. His name appeared as part of the Freshman class in the 1929 yearbook. He married Jacqueline Alice (Neblett) (1913-1979) Dechant in New Jersey in 1935. The couple lived first in Concord, PA, where, in 1940, Burton worked as a runner in a paper company. Sometime after that, the couple moved to Florida where they remained for the remainder of their years together. They raised three children: Burton F. Jr., Richard J., and Jacqueline “Dutchess” De Chant. Burton served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant from 1944 to 1946. Apart from his military service, Burton worked as a funeral director at Wilhelm Thurston Funeral Home in St. Petersburg for many years, retiring in 1974. His obituary noted he was a member of the Massanutten Alumni Association when he died. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman.
