After, he was secretary and treasurer of Shenandoah Mutual Fire Insurance Company until he retired in 1987. He continued as Chairman of the Board until 2009. Always active in his community, Bill was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Edinburg, a life member of Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Woodstock American Legion Post #199 and the International Order of Oddfellows Lodge #82. He was the great grandnephew of George Washington and the last Washington to own Mount Vernon. During the US Civil War, he was a Lt. Colonel in the Confederate Army. In 1840 he graduated from the University of Virginia. Three years later, he married Eleanor Love Seldon. He purchased a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia called "Waveland" where he made his home. His wife died in 1860 from childbirth. When Virginia seceded from the Union John volunteered to defend Virginia in the oncoming conflict. He served as aide-de-camp on the staff of General Robert E. Lee in the campaign of western Virginia. He was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel on this campaign. While reconnoitering in the Cheat Mountains of now West Virginia he was shot by a bushwhacker and killed. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
