The insignia on his uniform indicates he held the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class and worked as an Aviation Machinist's Mate. Chalmers was the son of Abe and Ruth (Jennings) Sheetz. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1943 to December 1945. He then worked at the American Viscose plant and married Betsy Ann Bowman, a waitress from Woodstock, in 1946. Shortly after Chalmers died, the Free Press newspaper published a column by Jim Morrison of Edinburg that said this about Chalmers: "The second event sadly was the passing of one of Woodstock's true icons, Francis Chalmers Sheetz. Chalmers was well known to all in Woodstock, and I never heard a harsh word from anyone directed toward him He was a very active person all of his life and I can't recall anyone his age at any time who was in better physical condition He was a postman but oh so much more than that." Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
