The Mount Vernon School was located at the intersection of Patmos and Fravel Roads (Routes 676 and 763) west of Woodstock Virginia. After the school closed the building was converted into a private home which still stands as of 2026. It was adjacent to Milton Fravel’s Farm. Milton’s sons were Dallas Fravel, Clarence Fravel, and Hubert Fravel who are pictured here. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement.
