The date of the picture is unknown, but it was most likely taken in Kalesmenon, Greece, where the family lived. James G. Kotsianas was a Greek immigrant who operated the New York Restaurant in Woodstock Virginia from 1922-1947. He was known locally as “Jimmy the Greek.” He had left his wife and children behind in Greece when he immigrated to the United States and made many trips back to Greece to visit. When the Italians invaded Greece in 1940, James returned to Greece to fight. He was unable to return to the United States until 1946, after the war. When he returned, he brought his wife and two youngest children back with him. In 1947, he moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, with his family and lived there until his death in 1956. Clarence was the son of James Kibler of the Woodstock area. Clarence was the Commissioner of Revenue for Woodstock and/or Shenandoah County at one time. He also had a small greenhouse operation near the Woodstock town park. Clarence was married twice. His first wife was Clara Sheetz (daughter of William and Henrietta (Sheetz) Sheetz). They married in 1907 and Audrey was their daughter. Clara died in August 1911. His second wife was Bessie Finks who is pictured here. Her parents were John and Emma (Brown) Finks. She and Clarence married in June 1916 and had a daughter, Gyneth (Kibler) Pence, born in 1918. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
