Cadet Crawn was the son of Josiah F. and his second wife, Annie Roberta (Ward) Crawn. His mother died when he was a toddler. His father was a prominent miller at North River and a well-known citizen of Mt. Crawford, Rockingham County, Virginia. He graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in 1917 and enlisted in the U.S. Marines in the summer of 1918. After training at Parris Island, South Carolina, he was sent overseas, arriving in France about a week before the Armistice was signed in November 1918. Private Crawn served with the 80th company of the 6th Marine Regiment in France and Germany. He was discharged in August 1919. After his military service, he found work at an insurance agency in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but was there only a few months before contracting an unusual “sleeping sickness” that put him in a coma for the last six weeks of his life. His remains were returned to Mt. Crawford where he was buried. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
