Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. The single-story portion of the building with the peaked roof on the right was originally the home of the New Market Academy which was founded in 1817, though the exact date of this building is unknown. In 1870 the polytechnic institute opened and the two story portion of the building was constructed. The school offered collegiate degrees under Benjamin Benton and Joseph Salyards until 1895. The building stood at the corner of John Sevier Road and Lee Street. As of 2025, the land was a parking lot. This image was used on page 468 of John Wayland's book, "The History of Shenandoah County". Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Title A name given to the resource George William Smith Collection Subject The topic of the resource Smith, George William (1900-2000) Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource Digitized photographs from the collection of George William Smith of Woodstock Virginia. George William Smith (1900-2000) was an African American citizen of the town of Woodstock who was noted for his collections, including many items rescued from the trash. He lived on Water Street and attended Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Woodstock. Smith is buried at the Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. Two hundred and seventy nine of the rescued photographs that are part of this collection were taken and/or processed by Woodstock photographer Hugh Morrison. An amateur photographer, George Smith took hundreds of photographs of the town during the 1980s and early 1990s for his amusement. These images are available at the Shenandoah County Library but have not yet been digitized. Title A name given to the resource New Year Card Subject The topic of the resource Lichliter, Zelda Description An account of the resource On December 28th, 1926 Miss Zelda Lichliter of Strasburg Virginia received this New Year’s card from Seona of Richmond Virginia. New Year cards were initially developed in the 19th century as secular versions of Christmas cards. Their use soon spread as communities around the world began using mass produced cards to celebrate almost every holiday, special occasion, and social visit. When Zelda received this card, printed materials were still popular forms of communication. However, their role would become more limited as phone service, and now internet connectivity spread throughout the country. While New Year, and other holiday cards are still sold, their popularity has waned. Who Seona was is unknown. However, we do know who Zelda Lichliter was. She was born in 1905 in Strasburg. Her father, William F. Lichliter worked for the B&O railroad and her mother Elizabeth Williams Lichliter was a homemaker. Both they, Zelda, her brother Frank, and sister Pauline were active members of the local Presbyterian Church. Zelda worked in numerous different places throughout her life but returned to the family home on Washington Street where she died in 1990. Her papers, and many of those of her family, are preserved in Shenandoah County Library’s Truban Archives.
