Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Olive graduated from Edinburg High School. Her parents were Harry Edward (1893-1953) and Elsie M. (Coffman) (1892-1971) Grim. In 1930, she was the youngest of four children and her father farmed. Her younger sister, Margaret, was born a year or so later. In January 1948, she married Floyd Eugene Mumaw (1927-1973), born in Columbia Furnace to David L. (1895-1952) and Lena Victoria (Linaweaver) (1904-1993) Mumaw. Floyd had served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. The couple began their marriage in Aliquippa, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, a town along the Ohio River about 18 miles northwest of Pittsburg. There, Olive looked after their young son, Daryl Eugene, while her husband worked as a “welded tube tester helper” in a steel mill. By the early fifties, the family had moved back to the Edinburg area of Shenandoah County where two additional children, Carolyn Sue and Vickie Lynn Mumaw, were born. Floyd worked for a textile company when he died in his forties. He became an aviation cadet and completed primary and basic pilot training before becoming an aerial gunner in B-24 Liberators. Linden served in the 15th Air Force, 459th Bomb Group, 756th Bomb Squadron in Italy during his WWII service. After the war, he married Mary Jane (Haislip) Fravel (1924-2018) in 1948. She was born in Salem, Virginia, and worked as a secretary for Lewis-Gale Hospital there when they married. Her parents were Walter Armstrong and Mary Leone (Johnston) Haislip. The couple lived in the Stephens City area of Frederick County for much of their married lives. Linden operated "Fravel's Plant and Fish Garden" as a nurseryman in his later years. Olivia was also an accomplished artist, active girl scout leader, and member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church. Her and her family lived in Edinburg. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. A photograph published in the Free Press on September 26, 2002, showed him standing with a group of Civil War Veterans at Stickley Hall on the NE corner of Muhlenberg and Spring Streets in Woodstock on January 19, 1924. It appears this photograph is a cropped version of a similar one of him taken at the same location. (See Morrison Studio Collection number 004750). Born in Strasburg, his parents were John Calvin (1816-1887) and Flora Elizabeth (Funk) (1820-1851) Pirkey. He started out in merchandising gaining experience with Edward Zea who operated a general store in Strasburg that later became known as "Zea and Wright". Later, he worked for thirty years as a railroad agent in Strasburg. He was also a partner with R.H. Riddleberger in the general merchandising business for a number of years. He was always active in the community and lived on King Street for most of his life. He married Mary Virginia Lehew (1855-1944) in 1874. The couple had a daughter together (who married a Campbell). When Omar Pirkey died, he left behind ten grandchildren. Both Omar and his wife are buried in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg. Also identified in 2002 by H.L. and J. Lockhart who provided a copy of the Free Press article and photograph along with an additional clipping about the 1924 event held at Stickley Hall. Biographical information was compiled from public sources including an article published in the Northern Virginia Daily on 30 October 1934, just after his death.
