Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Roy Arthur "Junior" Pangle was born on Capon Road in Strasburg to James Arthur and Zelda Belle (Beeler) Pangle. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and served with the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Battalion as a rifle marksman. His group served in Guam and North China. He attained the rank of Corporal. After his discharge in 1947, Junior Pangle returned to Strasburg and married Margaret Ann (Rennie) Pangle. The couple raised two sons and three daughters together over many decades they were together. Junior Pangle worked as a union carpenter for almost 40 years, retiring in 1989. He continued as a wood craftsman up until his death. Mr. Pangle was known in later years for selling eggs and driving his blue Chevy truck with his cane hanging on the side. His obituary noted, "He was a true landmark in the Strasburg community for over 90 years and will be missed dearly." Rosalie was born in Virginia, the daughter of Howard Johnston and Kathryn (Mahon) Benchoff, originally from Pennsylvania. In the 1920 census for Woodstock, she and her family lived on Muhlenberg Street. Her father was the Superintendent of Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock for many years while she was growing up. She graduated from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. When Rosalie married in 1930, a long article published in the Daily News Leader (Staunton) on July 27th called the event, “A wedding of great interest throughout the state…”. The article went on to note that the groom, Dr. William Baker Noel (1904-1971), was from Farmville. The couple had met in Baltimore when Rosalie attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Dr. Noel was at Johns Hopkins Medical school (class of 1929). The large wedding took place in the Massanutten Military Academy’s chapel and the reception was held on the lawn outside. The couple went to the Great Lakes and Canada for their honeymoon before settling in Detroit, Michigan, where Rosalie’s new husband started a job on the staff of the Henry Ford Hospital there. Twenty years later, the 1950 census found the family living in Henderson, North Carolina, where Dr. Noel was still a practicing surgeon and Rosalie was caring for her two sons, Robert F. and Richard J. Noel. Another son arrived later. Rosalie stayed in North Carolina for the rest of her life. Both she and her husband are buried together in Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson, N.C. Born in Edinburg, he was the son of Madison J. Riddleberger, a gunsmith by trade and stagecoach driver, and Susan S. Shyrock. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Virginia Infantry Company C. Later, he was a Captain of the 23rd Virginia Cavalry Company G. After the war, he became the editor and later sole proprietor of the Tenth Legion Banner, a local newspaper. During his life, he was also the editor of the Shenandoah Democrat and later, the Virginian, in Woodstock. He married Emma V. Belew. Together, the couple had at least seven children together. He studied law in the office of Henry C. Allen in Woodstock, and was admitted to the bar, practicing in Woodstock from 1871-1875. He went on to hold increasingly more prominent roles in Shenandoah County and became a U.S. Senator before he died in 1890. He was heavily involved in the 1880's Virginia debt arguments regarding the "Funders" vs. the "Re-adjusters". A note is written at the bottom of the original image that says, "Your brother, H.H. Riddleberger". Description An account of the resource Photograph of the Massanutten Academy diploma awarded in June 1934 to Walter Lamb Hopkins. Walter Lamb Hopkins, Jr. was born in New York City to Walter L. and Anna Lamb. His father was an architect in New York City. He died in the 1920s when Walter Jr. was a child. Walter L. Hopkins Jr. grew up on W. 181st Street in Manhattan. He had an older sister, Mary E., and it is likely his mother sent him to MMA in Woodstock for his education. The photograph indicates he completed his studies at MMA in 1934. The Northern Virginia Daily published an article on 24 February 1934 about the annual Poe vs. Jefferson Society debate held in Lantz Hall at MMA. The article noted that the gold medal award for best individual speaker was awarded to Cadet Walter L. Hopkins of the Jefferson Society. The subject of the debate that year was “Resolved that the United States Government should cancel all World War debts.” The Jefferson Society represented the negative side of the question. By 1940, Walter had completed 5 years of college and was working as a law clerk. When he registered for the WWII draft later that year, Walter’s employer was listed as the NYU Law School. Walter joined the U.S. Navy in June 1941 and served until October 1948. When he left, his rank was Lt. Commander. He later served in the NY Militia Service (1951-1954) and became a Commander. Walter married Constance Barley from Massachusetts in New York in 1947. Their daughter, Nancy, was born in May 1949. The 1950 census found the family living on Pineapple Street in Brooklyn where Walter worked as a lawyer. When he died, he lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image.
