Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Merville was the only son of Hubert Franklin (1884-1955) and Lucy Cleveland (Clark) (1885-1964) Fravel. He grew up in rural Woodstock on a farm. He married Flora Alice (Ryman) (1909-2004) Fravel in 1927. She was the daughter of Charles L. and Ruth Ryman. Both Merville and Flora had finished the 7th grade. The 1930 census found the family living on Kibler-town Road in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. Merville and Flora had a 2-year old son, Carroll. The young family lived with his parents and farmed. When he registered for the WWII draft, Merville still farmed with his father but also worked part-time at the Riverton Lime Company. Over the years, Merville and Flora had four children together: Carroll, Imogene, Thomas and Patsy Fravel. After their children had grown, the couple divorced in 1971. Merville married for the second time in 1979. His bride was Beulah Virginia (Corder) Huffman (1924-2018). When he died, his death certificate listed his occupation as a retired farmer for a private school. The name, "Fravel", is written on the glass negative of this image. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
