Ada was born in Strasburg, the daughter of a tailor who operated Wolfsons Clothing Store. She grew up in a Jewish household. She later married Joseph Samuels and they eventually came to run the store themselves. Outside their business, Ada worked as a volunteer with the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital and the Strasburg Hospitality Cart. They also regularly attended Wayside Theater productions in Middletown and Bark Hill Theater productions in Winchester. Ada's cooking regime was defined by her commitment to a Kosher lifestyle. She would travel to Baltimore to purchase her meat and other items from a relative. Ada died in Ventura County California. David grew up on West King Street, one of five children born to George Gilbert and Anne Preston (White) Crawford. His father was a well-known doctor and worked out of his home, the present-day Strasburg Community Library. David attended Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock. When he registered for the WWII draft, he worked at the American Viscose Plant in Front Royal. He graduated from the University of Virginia’s School of Commerce and School of Medicine. In 1951, while in Charlottesville, he married a student from the School of Nursing, Martha Jean (Morrow) Crawford (1930-1981). She was born in Bramwell, West Virginia, to Edward Earle and Martha Elmira (Wright) Morrow. David began his medical career in Waynesboro in 1957 and continued to practice medicine there until he retired in 1998. He and his wife raised two sons, Edwin M. Crawford and David J. Crawford, III. He and his wife were actively involved in the Augusta County community. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
