Title A name given to the resource President McKinley in Woodstock Subject The topic of the resource McKinley, William Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource On May 20th, 1899 William McKinley, President of the United States, travelled through Shenandoah County aboard a special B&O Railroad Coach. The President was returning to Washington DC after spending time vacationing in Hot Springs Virginia. During his trip the President stopped at several local towns. Newspaper reports indicate he stopped in Timberville, Mt. Jackson, and Woodstock. These accounts fail to mention any visits to other locations. His time in the county included two notable moments. In Mt. Jackson a “cake walk” was underway and delegations from all the towns were present for entertainment and festivities. The prominent performer at the event was R.J. Walker who dressed in dark face, impersonated the “negro character,” and played “their music” for the crowd. When the President arrived he was presented with the largest cake from the walk. The Shenandoah Valley newspaper concluded its coverage by reprinting a telegram thanking the town for the cake to dispel the rumor that the President had feared the cake was poisoned and had thrown it out near Hawkinstown. In Woodstock a large crowd and dignitaries greeted him at the depot. J.H. Williams, a prominent regional politician, greeted him and called Woodstock a “provincial town” which was dedicated to the principals of it Muhlenberg and its forefathers, even though they did not always support the President’s political views. President McKinley responded “I am aware of it-and am glad to meet you.” Williams also referred to McKinley’s Civil War service in the Valley and told the President “When you were here before, I...shot at you.” Today, many local residents would never imagine that the President of the United States would stop in Shenandoah County, visits with residents, or eat a cake from Mt. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. The couple married in 1909 and raised eleven children in Woodstock. At first, Preston worked as a porter in a hotel. In subsequent records, he held a variety of other jobs, even running his own pressing shop in the 1930 census. A few years later, the Northern Virginia Newspaper published this on May 27, 1933: "Raymond L. Miller has rented the O.K. Cleaning and Pressing Establishment on Court Street and has employed Preston Scott, an experienced cleaner and presser." But Preston was mostly known for his baritone voice, his ability to bring singing groups to local events, and his successful catering services around the Woodstock area. In his later years, Preston had a leg amputated. The Northern Virginia Daily published a short note about the operation on January 9, 1962. The article began, "Preston Scott, Woodstock, probably the most highly respected colored citizen in Shenandoah County...". The eleven children of this couple were: Robert D. A few years later, the Northern Virginia Newspaper published this on May 27, 1933: "Raymond L. Miller has rented the O.K. Cleaning and Pressing Establishment on Court Street and has employed Preston Scott, an experienced cleaner and presser." But Preston was mostly known for his baritone voice, his ability to bring singing groups to local events, and his successful catering services around the Woodstock area. In his later years, Preston had a leg amputated. The Northern Virginia Daily published a short note about the operation on January 9, 1962. The article began, "Preston Scott, Woodstock, probably the most highly respected colored citizen in Shenandoah County...". The eleven children of this couple were: Robert D. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
