Title A name given to the resource Rifle Squad Subject The topic of the resource Massanutten Academy (Woodstock Va) Description An account of the resource This photograph shows the Massanutten Academy's rifle squad in 1940. Due to the military nature of the institution rifle training was standard for each student. The 1940 school yearbook noted it “was practically continuous during the first and second terms.” To improve the quality of their student’s marksmanship, a new system was introduced where the entire school would receive enhanced training and then compete to be on the school’s rifle team. This was apparently successful, and the school observed it “made for better shooting in the cadet corps as a whole.” However it did not translate into success in inter-school competitions. To meet R.O.T.C. requirements, the school had to send a team to a regional shooting match. Cadets who outshot their academy cohorts were outmatched at this competition and placed eighth out of ten schools present. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Jackson. This building was originally the site of the Riverside Tea Room, a restaurant opened between 1920 and 1925 by Arline (Allen) Davis and backed by owners Ken and Frank Stoneburner. It closed in the early 1930's. In 1935, the site became "The Spot", a local dancing establishment where people could enjoy music, social opportunities, and a bottle brought from home. The Spot closed in 1949. The building burned in September 1950, just one day after it had re-opened as a manufacturing facility to make drape material. The building still stands between the river and Route 11 which has since been re-routed to the west of the site..
