Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. The mother of seven children, she did her share of hard work on their family farm observing in one interview “I have done everything but plow the land… I have helped to gather the corn, shucked it, ran the disc, harrowed the land, took care of the sheep, hogs, cattle, and the work horses.” After the death of her husband in 1944, Ruth managed the farm by herself for three years before going to work as a housekeeper for a Woodstock family. Over the next thirty years she also worked various other odd jobs as a baby sitter while living on Spring Street in Woodstock Virginia. Outside of work she was active in the Maurertown Brethren Church, teaching Sunday School and leading their missionary society. Ruth was from Woodstock, the daughter of Hugh Franklin "Frank" and Lucy Houston (Snapp) Boyer. She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1941, and attended Shenandoah Business College. In 1946, she graduated from Mary Washington College and was employed by the Frederick County School System as a Home Economics teacher in Stephens City. She married Ray D. "Free" Rinker (1904-1973) in 1948 and moved to the Rinker family farm in Frederick County. They changed it from a general farm to an orchard operation. Two sons, Randy and Dudley, were raised here. When they entered school, Mrs. Rinker returned to teaching where she taught sixth grade until retirement in 1986. When her husband was taken ill in 1971, she took over their orchard operation. She is buried in Stephens City, Frederick County, Virginia. Ruth volunteered with the Shenandoah Garden Club and other groups organizing arts festivals and bazaars. Ruth was one of many children born to Albert Alonza (1864-1922) and Clara Virginia (Feller) (1885-1952) Copp. She grew up on a farm in the Saumsville area, but her father died when she was a toddler. Her older brothers and widowed mother continued to farm. Ruth married Robert Stevenson Daily (1917-2000) in the summer of 1940. At the time, he was working for the C.C.C. as a foundry engineer (core maker) at Camp Roosevelt near Edinburg. He was born in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, to Robert James and Elizabeth (McHugh) Daily. After their wedding, Robert registered for the WWII draft in October 1940 where he was described as being 5’6” tall and 136 pounds with a scar over his right eye. Four years later, he enlisted in the Army and served as a Sergeant. By 1950, the couple had two young children, Virginia, 8 years old and born in Pennsylvania (who is pictured in this photograph), and Roberta, 2 years old and born in Maryland. The family lived in Colesville, Maryland, where Robert operated a bull dozer at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Ruth and her husband spent their later years together in Maurertown. They are buried in Saumsville. Virginia Marie Daily married Berlin Leonard Cooper in Arlington, Virginia, just after Christmas, in 1963. At that time, she worked as a telephone operator with C& P. Her new husband was an inspector for the Virginia Department of Highways. He was born in Winchester, the son of John Calvin and Lelia Virginia (Brill) Cooper, and lived in Strasburg. After they married, the couple lived in Toms Brook for many years. The name, "Robt. Daily", is written on the glass plate. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
