Title A name given to the resource Stonewall Jackson Gymnatsics Subject The topic of the resource Stonewall Jackson High School (Quicksburg Va) Gymnastics Description An account of the resource For several years during the 1960s and 1970s, Stonewall Jackson High School fielded a competition gymnastics team. At the time, it and cheerleading were the only two sports offered to girls at the time. While information is sketchy, it appears that the 1966 team, pictured above, had a successful year. Their yearbook reported they participated in the state gymnastic meet in Roanoke. There Debbi Winoker one the tumbling competition. Shen also placed fifth in the tumbling division and Carolyn Lutz placed seventh in tumbling. The article describing their competitions noted it was their “most successful season.” Based on the photographs in the annual, it appears that the 1966 gymnastics team was a very whimsical group. Their pictures are the most carefree of any sports teams pictured. Despite this, gymnastics would not continue as a sponsored sport in the county and it is no longer offered at any local school. The mother of seven children, she did her share of hard work on their family farm observing in one interview “I have done everything but plow the land… I have helped to gather the corn, shucked it, ran the disc, harrowed the land, took care of the sheep, hogs, cattle, and the work horses.” After the death of her husband in 1944, Ruth managed the farm by herself for three years before going to work as a housekeeper for a Woodstock family. Over the next thirty years she also worked various other odd jobs as a baby sitter while living on Spring Street in Woodstock Virginia. Outside of work she was active in the Maurertown Brethren Church, teaching Sunday School and leading their missionary society.
