The mother of seven children, she did her share of hard work on their family farm observing in one interview “I have done everything but plow the land… I have helped to gather the corn, shucked it, ran the disc, harrowed the land, took care of the sheep, hogs, cattle, and the work horses.” After the death of her husband in 1944, Ruth managed the farm by herself for three years before going to work as a housekeeper for a Woodstock family. Over the next thirty years she also worked various other odd jobs as a baby sitter while living on Spring Street in Woodstock Virginia. Outside of work she was active in the Maurertown Brethren Church, teaching Sunday School and leading their missionary society. (1974) Biographical Text Shelley Rucker moved to Shenandoah County in 1974 with her husband Guy to establish the Little North Farm Contract Beef Inc. This company provided individuals the opportunity to purchase beef steers, graze them on the Little North Farm near Conicville, and then have them slaughtered and processed. This custom beef feeding plan was very popular with residents of the Washington DC area interested in sourcing their beef directly from the farm instead of buying it in a supermarket. Born in Alabama, Shelley spent much of her early life in the Philippines and other Far East countries while her father worked with the Lykes Steamship Company. She graduated from Jacksonville Teacher’s College in Jacksonville Alabama. After living in Wilmington NC and northern Virginia, she moved to Shenandoah County with her family to pursue their business dream for which Shelley served as treasurer. Outside of work, Shelley had three children Lynn, Brenda, and Cassandra. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and founding regent of Shenandoah County’s Narrow Passage Chapter, NSDAR. Daughter of a tailor who operated Wolfsons Clothing Store, she grew up in a Jewish Household. She later married Joseph Samuels and they eventually came to run the store themselves. Outside their business, Ada worked as a volunteer with the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital and the Strasburg Hospitality Cart. They also regularly attended Wayside Theater productions in Middletown VA and Bark Hill Theater productions in Winchester. Ada's cooking regime was defined by her commitment to a Kosher lifestyle. She would travel to Baltimore to purchase her meat and other items from a relative. Ada died in Ventura County California in 1984. She married Woodstock native Stanley Frazier while he was stationed at Fort Sill. In 1963 she moved to Woodstock when her husband was transferred to the local Leggett's Store. She went to work for Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, the hospital campaign, and the county school board. Eventually she became a partner in opening the "Sue-Wan" Beauty Shop in the Woodstock Shopping Center and opened the Woodstock Hallmark Store in 1969. Outside of her businesses, Wanda was a mother to three boys, a member and Treasurer of the 1st Baptist Church, and a member of the Massanutten Garden Club. She died on December 4, 2008 in North Carolina. Published in the Shenandoah Herald on June 26, 1969 as part of their "Country Kitchens" series. Esther was born April 18, 1911 to Barney and Katie Virginia Foltz. She married Raymond F. Miller on February 23, 1929 in Hagerstown Maryland. Esther lived in Edinburg Virginia. She worked with her husband in the family's printing business. Her primary role was as bookkeeper, but she also ran the printing press. Outside the printing shop which opened in 1955, Esther was a cafeteria worker at the Edinburg School. She started as a cook and retired as the kitchen manager in 1967. She observed "for some children the meal at school was the only meal they had the entire day." Esther and her husband lived on the east side of Edinburg. There they raised their niece Sandra Orndorff. Esther died in 1990 and is buried at Cedarwood Cemetery. Rinker Sr. They had two children Garnett Rinker Jr. and James Rinker. Garnett Rinker Jr. was killed in action on June 6, 1944 while serving with the US Army during the Normandy Invasion. Mary lived on a farm near Woodstock for her entire life. At one time she was known for her butter from five Guernseys cows. She would churn 28 pounds of butter at a time and sell it in one pound blocks. Later in her life she established extensive flower gardens growing peonies, begonias, dahlias, and amaryllis which decorated her home and church. She also sold some of her flowers as a way to support her garden. Mary died on September 8 1982 and is buried in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. She was also active in the Zepp home demonstration group, having hosted their first meeting in 1934, the Cedar Creek Christian Church, the Christian Women's Fellowship, and the Cedar Creek Community Center.
