Description
Portrait of Dr. John Walter Wayland, best remembered as the author of several books on the history of Shenandoah County.
He was the son of John Wesley Wayland and Anna (Kagey) Wayland.
He received his B.A. degree from Bridgewater College in 1899, and his Ph.D in 1907 from University of Virginia.
Dr. Wayland taught history and ethics at Bridgewater for two years and helped organize the Harrisonburg State Normal School (now called James Madison University). He taught as a Professor of History in Harrisonburg for many years.
He married Mattie Virginia Fry and they had two sons.
