Biographical Text
James was a native of Kilauea, Kauai County, Hawaii. He attended Massanutten Academy in Woodstock from 1913 until graduating 1917. He was the school's first student from the Hawaiian Islands.
He joined the US Army on September 18, 1917 at Woodstock. He served as a corporal with the Headquarters Company of the 318th Infantry Regiment, but was discharged on December 26 1917 due to ill health and returned to Massanutten Academy.
In June, 1918 he returned to his home on Honolulu Hawaii due to ill health and died there on June 5, 1918 of influenza. He is buried in the Nuuanu/O'ahu Cemetery in Honolulu.
The Shenandoah Herald newspaper reported on July 26, 1918 that James was "quiet, unassuming, gentle, courteous" and "brave as a lion." They lamented his death and presence in their community, especially his musical talents noting he "brought the Ukulele to Woodstock."
