Description
Portrait of Sydney Funkhouser as a young man.
Sydney was born in Alum Springs, near Basye, to Floyd Fletcher and Grace Virginia (Nealy) Funkhouser. He was working for Mr. William R. Bryce in Basye when he registered for the WWII draft.
Sydney was an apprentice carpenter for a time as he learned the craft from his father. He moved to Mt. Jackson, where, in 1946, he married Frances Marie Strickler (1924-2020), a young woman born in Woodstock to Thomas Edward and Olive Bertha (Sibert) Strickler. He continued to work as a carpenter.
Over the years together, the couple had several sons – Michael, Dennis, Steven, Ricky and Gregory – and a daughter, Linda Lee (Funkhouser) Brown.
