Description

Portrait of Herbert "Hink" Powell in his U.S. Army uniform.

Herbert grew up in Fort Valley, one of at least eight children born to Kemper Clay (1896-1938) and Zola Eugenia (Munch) Powell (1900-1978).

When Herbert turned 18 and registered for the WWII draft, his father had already died. Herbert was working for Harry Dinges in the St. David’s region of Fort Valley. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1943 to April 1946 and then re-enlisted for another tour from January 1948 to January 1949. He never married, lived in Luray, and was working as a cook for the U.S. Government when he died.

He is buried in the Munch Family Cemetery in Fort Valley.
