Portrait of Peggy Gene Sousa Carpenter as a young woman.
Peggy Gene Sousa Carpenter was born in Woodstock Virginia to parents Felix Luis Sousa (1896-1988) and Mildred (Ramey) Sousa (1907-2001). She lived in Staunton for a time when she was a girl and graduated from that city’s Robert E. Lee High School in 1949.

After high school, Peggy moved to Winchester and attended nursing school before working at Winchester Memorial Hospital. In the 1950 census she lived in the hospital’s nurses’ boarding house.

In February 1951, she married John Andrew Anderson Jr. of Winchester. They had a daughter together, Barbara (Anderson) Funk, but they divorced in 1970. At that time Peggy was working at a surgical clinic in Winchester and living in that city.

After her divorce, Peggy returned to Woodstock. In 1973 she married Frank Strother Carpenter, Jr. and remained married until his death in 1994.

Peggy died in 2021 and is buried with Frank in Berryville Virginia.
