Description

Millson Sheetz French and his older brother, Warren Ballinger French, Jr. seated together as very young children.

They were the first two of ten children born to Lena Belle (Sheetz) (1895-1976) and Warren Ballinger (1888-1973) French of Woodstock.

Millson and Warren went to school together despite their age difference. They graduated from Woodstock High School, then spent a year at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) where an Algebra class was available.

After MMA, Millson attended Roanoke College for a time. He eventually earned his pharmacy degree from Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1952. Upon returning to Woodstock, he became an owner of Walton & Smoot Drugstore. He married Doris (Funkhouser) (1925-2020) French in 1947. The couple had five children together.

Warren B. French went to engineering school at the University of Virginia, and joined the ROTC program there. When WWII started, he entered an accelerated training program, received a Navy commission as an ensign, and left college to join the war effort. After his discharge in the spring of 1946, he returned to UVA and received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1947. Two years later, he married Patricia Hamill Teale in Silver Spring, Maryland. Warren B. French Jr. is best remembered in the county for the many years he served as the General Manager of Shentel.
