Title

Grace (Hutchinson) Carter

Subject

Carter, Grace Virginia (Hutchinson) (1917-1992)

Description

A portrait of Grace Hutcheson Carter as a young woman wearing a collared blouse.

Grace was from Edinburg, the second child born to John Conway (1884-1942) and Cara Mabel (Downey) (1889-1947) Hutchinson. Her father was a travelling salesman born in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

She married a divorced man, Adrian Garrett Carter, Jr. in 1937. Adrian was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, the son of Adrian Garrett Carter Sr. and Charlotte M. (Conner) Carter. He lived in Dundalk, Maryland, and worked for the Bethlehem Steel Company, when he married Grace in Edinburg. In 1940, the couple had a young son and lived in the Parkville area of Baltimore, Maryland. There, Grace’s husband worked as a shipping clerk in a shipyard.

Their marriage did not last. The 1950 census found Grace, separated, living on High Street in Edinburg and working as a beautician in a beauty shop. Three young children and her widowed uncle lived with her. The couple formally divorced in 1955.

When she died, Grace left behind a son, Gary Carter, and two daughters, Susan (Carter) Mayer, and Emily (Carter) Koon.
