The single-story portion of the building with the peaked roof on the right was originally the home of the New Market Academy which was founded in 1817, though the exact date of this building is unknown.
In 1870 the polytechnic institute opened and the two story portion of the building was constructed. The school offered collegiate degrees under Benjamin Benton and Joseph Salyards until 1895.
The building stood at the corner of John Sevier Road and Lee Street. As of 2025, the land was a parking lot.
This image was used on page 468 of John Wayland's book, "The History of Shenandoah County".
