November Elections Result in Historic Victories:

Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was elected the first openly
gay U.S. Senator (she was previously the first openly
lesbian member of the U.S. House of Representatives). Baldwin’s former House seat was won by an
openly gay man, Marc Pocan (D-WI)

President Obama, the first president to support marriage equality, was reelected.

For the first time, three states - Maine, Maryland,
and Washington - won ballot measures supporting
marriage equality.

For the first time, one state (Minnesota), rejected a
ballot initiative to ban marriage equality.

The SVGLA “Family Connectshen” is published quarterly
(in March, June, September, and December).

Miss Statuesque Pageant FUNDRAISER
December 1, 2012, 8:30pm at The Artful Dodger,
Court Square, Harrisonburg
Hosted by TARA WHEELER, Miss Virginia 2008 (who competed for Miss
America in 2009) and current TV News Personality for CBS19, ABC16, &
FOX27. Miss Wheeler has for many years helped to raise funds for children
with special needs, such as the time she shaved her head bald after raising
$500,000.00 for St. Baldrick's Foundation, which funds cancer research.
During the evening, the reigning Miss Statuesque, Jasmine Taylekia, will take
her final walk and we will celebrate her reign.
This year’s pageant is a benefit to help someone in our community, a 7 year old
girl, Haley, who is living with Cerebral Folate Deficiency, Global Developmental Delay, Epilepsy, and Cortical Visual Impairment. She is in need of a Rifton
Adaptive Tricycle to assist with day-to-day living. The Tricycle costs $2,000. We
hope to raise as much as we can to help to purchase this for her.
Whoever would like to be in the running for the Miss Statuesque Pageant title
will perform two numbers. The performer who raises the most money will win
the pageant and will receive a crown and sash.
100% of the funds raised will go to Haley’s family to help purchase this Tricycle for Haley. This is an amazing event for an amazing cause. Haley and her
mother will be traveling from West Virginia to attend the event.
If you are interested in competing for this title or making a donation to help
Haley get her tricycle, please contact KJ Branner at (540)435-3887 or email at
6229603@facebook.com

EV is Virginia’s state-wide, non-partisan education, outreach,
and advocacy organization seeking equality for LGBT Virginians.
Milestone victories in the November give us hope; here at home we
have work to do. In Virginia,
Governor McDonnell allows the State Board of Social Services to discriminate against LGBT youth in the foster care system.
• Longtime partners can find themselves homeless because Governor
McDonnell won’t extend Medicaid spousal impoverishment protections to
same-sex couples.
• It is still legal to fire and not hire someone based on sexual orientation and
gender identity in Virginia
• It is still legal to deny housing to people based on sexual orientation and
gender identity.
• The leadership in the Virginia House of Delegates won’t allow any proLGBT bills out of committee for a full and open vote.

Make Your Voice Heard on EV’s Day of Action
Join LGBT and allied folks from across the state in taking a stand on
EV’s Day of Action and speaking up fairness at the Library of Virginia on
800 East Broad St. in Richmond, Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Lobby for
important bills that will help improve the state of equality in Virginia, and
participate in a day filled with networking and workshops. For more information on EV’s Day of Action and the schedule of events, go to
