Dec. 29, 1942 New River
Dear Family,
I would have written sooner but I have been waiting to get the box. I went to the post office but they said I would have to wait until it was sorted out and sent to my headquarters and that would take a few days. I received the money in the nick of time and spent a fine Christmas in Kingston with the Heath family and took the place of their son who is in the army, but sure wish I could have been home. Well I still don’t know about my furlough or if I get it Jan 4. But I sure hope so. If I don’t get home then I’ll be a sad sack of shoestrings.
Tell Wallace I hope to see him soon and to have things fixed for my furlough. Well so-long till later. Love Joe
