Dear Mother & All,
I have some news of all sorts both good and some not so good. We will take the bad first. All of the furloughs have been canceled until after the 15th of this mo. so I don’t know when I’ll get home but we are getting them [the furloughs] so that’s not too bad, is it? I would have written sooner but I didn’t want to write until I got all the dope,
I’m going to turn my money in at the office so I’ll save it. When you address my next letter be sure and make it PFC Hines – Yes it happened at last.
My name was ninth on a list of ninety, this last list, I mean. So now at least I have one stripe at least. I’m going up and have Dick Regar’s [Regan’s?] niece sew it on. I’m really down in the dumps this evening. I haven’t heard from Margaret in two weeks. None of the guys have been getting any mail.
Mother have everything ready for me when get there because I’ll have a million things to do. Swann’s [Swanson’s] girl is stepping out on him and he is pissed off, don’t blame him. Did I tell you I heard from Wallace and he was in the dispensary?
My old DI was shipped out here and he is a squad leader in my platoon. I’m in the third Platoon now and we haven’t got a “Louie” and my sergeant’s name is Blake. He just said tell you Hello. Well I’ll sign off now till later.
Love Joe
