Description
Letter written from R.K. Hoch to the manager of the "Woodstock Ball Club" inquiring about playing for the team that year. At the time Woodstock fielded a team as part of the Shenandoah Valley Baseball League which included teams from throughout the region. The Woodstock manager was W.E. Stickley who also played on the team.
Hoch was a catcher for the University of Delaware's baseball team in 1922, 1923, and 1924. When he wrote to the Woodstock team it was under the advice of his coach Howard Burton Shipley. While at Delaware he appears to have been a member of the Delta Sigma Nu Fraternity whose newsletter from that year indicates two other members of his family had also played baseball for the team while at Delaware.
At the time it was common for college baseball plays to play for local baseball teams during the summer alongside local players. However, it does not appear that Hoch ever played for the Woodstock team.

Dear sir:
How are you fixed for catchers? I can also play outfield. Manager Shipley recommends me. I prefer to play away from home in summers because of college sports. Caught on University of Delaware team this past season.
Wire me at Salisburg in care of Shipley.
Very truly yours,
R.K. Hoch
P.S. Shipley was my coach at college last year. RKH
