Joseph Fayette was born May 22, 1854 to mother Martha (also listed as Matha). He was born a slave and enslaved by Israel P. Rinker.

Joseph was born in the Zion Church community. Other family members are sisters Sarah Isabella and Annie Cordelia. The birth record indicated he was born "perfect" and his father lived at the same residence.
