The name, “Preston Grandel” is written on the glass plate of this image of a young woman and her child.
Upon further research, we have identified this woman as Mary Lee Harler, the first wife of Preston Newman Grandel (1921-1984). The couple married in Winchester, in January 1946, not long after Preston’s discharge from the Army.
She was born in Mountain Falls, Frederick County, Virginia, to James H. and Odie B. (Hulver) Harler. Preston and Mary lived in Stephens City, married in Winchester, and lived in the Opequon District of the County during the years they were together.
The child is one of four they had together. It is likely this was their second child, Marian Preston Grandel, born in April 1948, but we cannot be sure.
Preston and Mary divorced in the early 1970’s and both remarried soon after.
