Howard Johnston Benchoff was a well-known and influential headmaster of Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock.
He was the son of Loudon Francis and Martha Belle (Johnston) Benchoff. His first wife was Kathryn Leona Mahon who died in 1918. His second wife was Florence Conant. He had a son, Robert J. Benchoff and a daughter, Mrs. William (Rosalie) W. Noel, when he died in Woodstock in 1958.
His son, Robert, graduated from Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) and later became the Headmaster of the school when his father retired.
