This photo shows Corporal Linden Zirkle of New Market fusing a tank mine somewhere in South Korea. It appeared on the front page of the September 7, 1950 Shenandoah Herald. At the time the United States forces in Korea were attempting to stop the North Korean advance into the south. Zirkle was a member of the 25th Infantry, nicknamed “Tropic Lightning.”
Corporal Zirkle was captured by the North Koreans in December of 1950 and would remain a captive until released in August of 1953. He returned to the New Market area and died on September 13, 1965 at the age of 38.
