Lived in Fortsmouth Furnace in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Melford ran away on the evening of May 18, 1839. A reward ad placed in the newspaper described him as being five feet and eight inches tall, of dark complexion, and having flat shoulders, high cheek bones, and a pleasant address.
