According to the 1860 census, John W. Rice was 67 years old, and he owned four slaves: a 15-year-old black female, a 9-year-old mulatto male, a 9-year-old black male, and a 5-year-old mulatto female.
James Gray previously had been enslaved by John Newman, the father of Sarah Ann Rice. The relationship between Sarah Rice and John Rice is unclear.
