Emanuel Gordon's birth is recorded on September 19, 1853 in the Commonwealth's Slave Birth Index. That recorded notes his mother was Ann Gordon, his owner was Jacob Lantz, and he was born at "Stony Creek."
In the 1870 census Emanuel "Gordan" is listed living in "Abington, Gloucester, Virginia" with the Whiting family where he works in the oyster industry.
On February 21, 1878 he marries one Bettie, also called Beatrice in some records, Ann Lewis. Two years later Emanuel, Bettie, their daughter Alice, and Emanuel's mother Nancy/Ann are living in "Abingdon, Gloucester, Virginia" where he is still employed as an "oysterman."
In the 1870 census Emanuel "Gordan" is listed living in "Abington, Gloucester, Virginia" with the Whiting family where he works in the oyster industry.
