Description
Known by several names, the Old Mill Tavern Restaurant was located on the southern edge of Strasburg on Route 11 (or Stover Avenue as that stretch is named). The building is still there today.
The original water-powered mill was built between 1797 and 1804, by the Spengler family, and was located close to the confluence of Cedar Spring Run and the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. It was a working flour mill for many years and known as the Spengler Mill.
During the 1920's and 1930's, it was operated by the Artz family and known as the Artz Mill.
It was converted into a well-known restaurant called "The Old Mill Tavern Restaurant" by the George Pappas family in 1938. The Old Mill was the place to go for dining, dancing and community celebrations under a number of different managers for nearly seventy years.
The Old Mill property was purchased by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #4186, in 2017.
