Title

Aftermath of 1900 Woodstock Fire

Subject

Woodstock (Va)
Fires - Virginia - Woodstock

Description

Photograph of the aftermath of a destructive fire in Woodstock that destroyed many buildings in the downtown area. The gas lamp in the foreground is the on the edge of the courthouse property looking across the street. Sometimes the area burned is called the "Boyer Block," or the "Boyer Block Fire."

The remains of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church are visible on the corner of Court and Main Streets. This church was rebuilt using the original walls, now reinforced with a chain.

On the corner where the boys are standing, was the W.F. Bargelt Jewelry Store, then W.T. Mauch, then a clothing store called "Horsey & Atwell" from Winchester, then the Geary Hotel and finally, an alley.

All the buildings were 3-story frame except the clothing store which was only 2 stories tall. There were no water works in place or electricity. The hand engine holding the water took 24 men to pump.
