John was the son of Phillie Branson (1906-1957) and Ruth Rosalie (Barb) (1908-1970) Delawder. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jerome and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII. After the war, he worked as a self employed mechanic.
He married Phyllis B. Delawder in November 1953. The couple had two sons: Gary W. Delawder and Dennis E. Delawder; and a daughter, Karen (Delawder) Ryman.
