Description
Photo of a photograph of Harrison Holt Riddleberger, who owned a local newspaper and became a prominent political player in Shenandoah County.
Born in Edinburg, he was the son of Madison J. Riddleberger, a gunsmith by trade and stagecoach driver, and Susan S. Shyrock.
After the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Virginia Infantry Company C. Later, he was a Captain of the 23rd Virginia Cavalry Company G.
After the war, he became the editor and later sole proprietor of the Tenth Legion Banner, a local newspaper. During his life, he was also the editor of the Shenandoah Democrat and later, the Virginian, in Woodstock.
He married Emma V. Belew. Together, the couple had at least seven children together.
He studied law in the office of Henry C. Allen in Woodstock, and was admitted to the bar, practicing in Woodstock from 1871-1875.
He went on to hold increasingly more prominent roles in Shenandoah County and became a U.S. Senator before he died in 1890.
He was heavily involved in the 1880's Virginia debt arguments regarding the "Funders" vs. the "Re-adjusters".
