Photograph of Robert Lemuel Getz, a Shenandoah County native who served in the U.S. Army during World War One.
Robert Getz was born in the Getz community of Shenandoah County. His parents were William Jackson and Permelia (Bowers) Getz.
He attended the U.S. College of Veterinary Science. When World War One began, he was practicing as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in Mt. Jackson Virginia.
On June 20, 1917 he enlisted in the United States Army's Medical Corps, Veterinary Section. He was assigned to the Remount Depot for the 80th division.
Later he served with the eastern division purchasing board in Washington DC, the remount depot at Camp Lee, and the remount depot at Camp Green in Charleston N.C.
On January 10, 1919 he was discharged as a 1st lieutenant and returned to civilian life as a Veterinary Doctor.
He married Birdie Mae (Helbert) Getz (1892-1968).
Robert Lemuel Getz died in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
On his postwar military service record survey he wrote his attitude toward military service was "favorable-interested."
