Portrait photograph of Henry Clay Allen with a mustache and wearing a suit.

Henry was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, a son of John James Allen and Mary Elizabeth Payne (Jackson) Allen. His father was born in Woodstock.

He is best remembered for his service as the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.

His wife was Julia McKay (Gatewood) Allen, who he married in 1867. The couple went on to raise at least eight children together.

Henry is buried in Woodstock, Virginia.
