Known as “Lee”, he was the third child born to John William and Edna Florence (Hamrick) Wright. His father farmed. The 1930 census found Lee living on South Water Street with his mother and three of his siblings. Lee worked as a mechanic. Lee’s parents divorced in 1940, after many years of living apart
In 1940, Lee worked at the American Viscose Corporation (later, it became Avtex fibers) in Front Royal. His WWII draft registration card described him as being 6 feet tall and 180 pounds.
He married Helen Blanche (Looney) Wright in 1941. She was born in Craig County, Virginia, to James Madison and Mattie Bell (Starks) Looney. Lee was her second husband.
Lee served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from February 1944 to June 1945.
By 1950, Lee was a laboratory technician at the Viscose Plant. He and his wife had a 2-year old daughter, Barbara.
