Subject
Caves - Virginia - Strasburg
Description
Unidentified people relaxing at Painters (Panther) Cove on Cedar Creek near Strasburg. This remote area is best accessed by canoe or kayak. The name, "Painters" is a corruption of "Panthers" as panthers formerly frequented the cavities and are still called "Painters" in some areas.
During the Civil War, Sheridan's troops occupied the bluff above the caves for a time before the Battle of Cedar Creek.
