Portrait photograph of young H. Kolbe Coffman in his U.S. Army uniform with an Anti-Aircraft Command insignia visible.

His parents were Gilbert K. and Lenore P. (Kolbe) Coffman. He was from Woodstock.

When he registered for the WWII draft on Christmas Eve 1942, he was still single and worked for C. B. Tully in Washington D.C. At that time, he was described as having, "a small scar immediately above his left eyebrow".
