Calvert, John Strother (1876-1949)

Description

Portrait photograph of John Strother Calvert in a suit and striped tie.

He was born in New Market to George and Ann (Clinedinst) Calvert and was a descendant of the Calvert family of Maryland. He came from a large family but never married.

Census data place him living in Richmond by 1900-1910. After that, he lived in Philadelphia, then Georgia, for a time. Eventually, he moved back to New Market and by 1940, he had been renting his home there for at least five years and worked in a bank there.

When he died of pancreatic cancer in 1949, he was buried in Emmanuel Cemetery, New Market.

Identified in 2002 by Nancy Stewart, who remembered him from when she was a child. She noted he was a close friend of Miss Abbie Henkel.
