He was the son of Reuben Lazarus and Jennie G. (Roseman) Kaplan. His father ran a dry goods store for many years in Strasburg. It was located on the corner of Fort and King Streets but burned down in 1996.
Albert had two brothers, Julius and Berton. The family lived above the store in an apartment.
