Pfc Spence served with the 18th infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Europe. He was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. He is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Liege, Belgium.
He received a Purple Heart.
