Description

Portrait of Thorold Joseph "T.J." Sharitz as a young man wearing a suit and tie.

T.J. was from Wythe County, Virginia, but briefly worked as an agriculture teacher at Strasburg High School before World War Two.

After the outbreak of the conflict, he enlisted in the US Army. He became a 1st Lieutenant with the 422 Infantry 106 Division in France during WWII.

In January 1945 he was captured by the German Army and held at Stalag 13 in Bavaria. He died on April 5 1945 while a prisoner, some reports indicating he was shot while escaping. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery in Lorraine, France.

He received a purple heart, World War Two Victory Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
