Crawn, John Heller (1896-1920)

Description

Portrait photograph of John Heller Crawn.

Cadet Crawn was the son of Josiah F. and his second wife, Annie Roberta (Ward) Crawn. His mother died when he was a toddler. His father was a prominent miller at North River and a well-known citizen of Mt. Crawford, Rockingham County, Virginia.

He graduated from Massanutten Military Academy in 1917 and enlisted in the U.S. Marines in the summer of 1918. After training at Parris Island, South Carolina, he was sent overseas, arriving in France about a week before the Armistice was signed in November 1918. Private Crawn served with the 80th company of the 6th Marine Regiment in France and Germany. He was discharged in August 1919.

After his military service, he found work at an insurance agency in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but was there only a few months before contracting an unusual “sleeping sickness” that put him in a coma for the last six weeks of his life.

His remains were returned to Mt. Crawford where he was buried.
