Twyman grew up in Edinburg, the son of Earl and Joyce (Dellinger) Bowman. He had two brothers, Dick D. and Alden Bowman.
Twyman moved to Newport News in 1942. In his career, he held management positions at Newport News Shipbuilding in the development and application of nuclear power for Naval Aircraft Carriers and Submarines.
According to his obituary, Twyman authored the book "Until I Left Home" in 2004.
